Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Aug. 12.
American Folk Festival Sponsor Party Set for August 21
The 18th annual American Folk Festival is set for August 23, 24, and 25 on the Bangor Waterfront. With the festival itself comes the 18th annual sponsor party, set for Wednesday night, August 21 at Hollywood Casino.
“This year’s sponsor party lands on a Wednesday night, giving us a chance to thank the people and businesses in this region that have made the American Folk Festival a success story for 18 years,” said Heather McCarthy, executive director of the American Folk Festival. “Having the party at Hollywood Casino this year is a new twist to this annual event. We are also featuring an exclusive performance this year from accordionist Ylli Brekofca to give our sponsors a taste of what they can expect at this year’s Festival.”
Albanian accordion player Ylli Brekofca emigrated to the United States in 2016 without his accordion. Ylli had performed on the accordion his father gave him as a teenager for nearly 50 years. Upon arriving in the United States, Ylli settled in Portland, where he met other local musicians at a jam session put on by the Maine Access Immigrant Network. He has been performing in and around Portland ever since, delighting audiences with his musicality and repertoire.
The annual Sponsor Kickoff Party is an opportunity to thank the businesses and individuals who help to fund the AFF. The Festival is an admission-free event, but takes close to a million dollars to produce, which comes from corporate sponsors, individual donors, and fundraising efforts like the Bucket Brigade collecting the $20 suggested donation from attendees at the Festival.
“The American Folk Festival continues to draw tens of thousands of people to the Bangor Waterfront every year,” said McCarthy. “This is the only event of its kind in the entire state. It’s truly open to all and offers such a rich, diverse range of music and culture for anyone who walks through the waterfront. To make it happen, we continue to need corporate sponsors and donations, and opportunities still exist for those looking to get in front of a very large and loyal audience.”
The 18th Annual American Folk Festival is set for August 23 – 25 on the Bangor Waterfront. It was announced in the spring that the American Folk Festival will have an altered setup for the next three years due to necessary construction taking place on the Bangor Waterfront. The Railroad Stage will move closer to the river, which will result in the Penobscot Stage to be combined with the Dance Pavilion on the downriver site. That stage will be temporarily renamed as the Showcase Stage, and will be on the site of the former Dance Pavilion. The schedule will combine performers that would typically be seen at the Penobscot Stage with performers typically seen at the Dance Pavilion on the newly named stage, which will still have a dance floor available for anyone looking to dance the night away.
